Thought of the Day

Our first president, George Washington, was born on this day in 1732. There is much to be admired from this man. What catches my attention is his faith. Here's a quote from Washington, "It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible." There is much truth behind this statement.

The prophet Jeremiah said something similar, "I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps." Jeremiah 10:23

Oh that we could learn this lesson! Life is always best when it is done in God's ways. In fact, the best that we could ever be is in complete conformity to the will of the Lord. Think about this thought today - in whatever role I'm filing, what would God have me do? As an employee or employer, as a teacher or student, as a parent, as a friend; will I fully submit myself this day to the will and leadership of the Lord? We sing the song, "He leadeth me, o blessed thought..."

Our first president understood the need of God and the Bible in his role as a leader. May I be humble enough to admit my daily need for the Lord - His forgiveness, His guidance, His grace and Salvation, and His wonderful Word guiding my ways! How will you submit to God today?

Thought of the Day

"But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray." - Luke 5:16

This simple passage gives us some great thoughts to consider. We notice how Jesus was a man of prayer. He was constantly in contact with the Father. When you read through the prayers Jesus offered, they aren't all the same. Some were long, others were just a few sentences. All of them were heartfelt, genuine, and fit the need of the moment. This verse also shows the consistency of Jesus' prayers in that He prayed often. This seems to be a challenge with many (myself included). I believe we all desire to pray more than we do. For some it could be a matter of simply forgetting. For others it may be a busy schedule that distracts that kind of thinking. Whatever the case may be, we can all strive to continually improve the time and quality of our prayers.

What may help praying more often is setting little reminders. Make a to-do list and add it on the list, only to be checked off once completed. Or set alarms throughout the day and make yourself pause when they go off to pray. The more we pray, the closer we become with our Father.

Let's not forget the word wilderness. Jesus slipped away from the crowds to pray in a place which is secluded and silent. It was a place He could meditate. It was a place He could fully devote to the Lord. Do you have a wilderness? Do you have a place you can slip away for some time with just you and the Lord? This means a place without the TV and radio blaring for attention. Maybe it is a room, or a closet (Matthew 6:6). Wherever it may be, don't neglect the private time spent alone with God in prayer. It is a time you can feel most comfortable and confident to pour out your heart to the Lord, and give Him the best of your thoughts and words.

Let's put this to work today! Remember to pray often, and to take time to pray alone with the Lord!
